Melbourne Storm Football club have been using the GPSports SPI PRO since mid 2008. This product allows coaches a greater insight into the physical demands and capabilities of our players. We are now able to accurately assess trainings based on definite player performances such as speed, impacts, acceleration rate, body load, recovery time and many other factors. With the use of the Realtime system our coaching staff are able to detect injury concerns, player fatigue and overtraining. The support we have received from the staff at GPSports has been very punctual and constructive.
Birmingham City Football Club
The GPS monitoring system was borrowed from GPSports and utilised in training during the week commencing Monday 1st December. Six units were used each day in training to monitor the progress of a number of individuals who were taking part in an energy balance investigation. There was a positive response from all of the players involved and some players who were not part of the energy balance investigation requested to wear the system for a day during training. The feedback from the players was that they did not really notice the system when they wore it; which was particularly interesting as one of the players was a goalkeeper. This has positive implications for the use of the system during training for players in all positions. The system gives great feedback for monitoring training, and as the speed and heart rate zones can be set for each individual, it can provide an effective way to identify ways to individualise training. The system and software were easy to use and quick and accurate feedback can be given to players in terms of time and distance covered in speed zones. The players were extremely appreciative of the information provided to them and each day after training they were coming to ask for their summary report sheet. This shows that not only does the system provide the coaching staff with invaluable data but also the players receive data on their own training sessions which they can understand. Therefore we could conclude from this that the GPS system was an effective way of monitoring training, as player “buy-in” and motivation to use the system was high. If possible we would like to use the system on a permanent basis in the future, however this is governed by whether the board make the funds available to purchase the system. As a sports science department we are positive about taking this forward and hope to develop a good working relationship with GPSports and their products in the near future.
